![]() As such, you'd expect the wording of Hunter's Mark to have been changed to refer to attacks made with weapons and unarmed strikes, or-more likely, in my opinion-just weapons.īut it's not because unarmed strikes are weapon attacks anymore per se, it's because it's highly likely that nothing is a weapon attack anymore. Yes, they're not referred to as weapon attacks, but I think what is far more reasonable is that nothing is a weapon attack anymore, and that they've thrown away that terminology all together. Unarmed strikes obviously can't be spell attacks, so what you're really saying is that they might be special attacks or a new category of attack, which there's currently absolutely no evidence for. The only alternative is a "special" melee attack, which is a category currently reserved for shoves or grapples. Logic dictates that they must be, because spell attacks don't make any sense here. Yes, you're told they're weapon attacks, but you'd expect them to be. Anything else is assumed to be a weapon attack. Melee and ranged attacks are self-explanatory, but the latter categories are basically decided on whether something is a spell or otherwise a special magical ability like a spell that explicitly says it's a spell attack. Current 5e rules generally categorises attacks into 2 categories and a further 2 subcategories, those being: Melee & Ranged attacks, and Weapon & Spell attacks. Unarmed Strikes weren't melee weapon attacks just because that was clarified, they're by default melee weapon attacks. I'm not so sure that line of reasoning works.
